The end WW2 leads to WW 2.5

What would have happened if the President had listened to General George S, Patton and right after the war with Germany and Japan ended we went after the USSR with the full force of the United States of America? How would the USSR have faired against us? would Patton have been able to pull off a massive victory and crush the Soviet Union? would the US be stuck in a stagnent war that just kept draining resources like a big Vietnam? would We have nuked them? Would Cuba, North Korea, or Vietnam become communist states? If we crushed the Soviets how would history have changed and what would the modern world look like? Ect....

Truman would be lynched for being a Jackass and giving us another God knows how many years of millions dying, starvation, waste, rationing and militarism.

How would the USSR have faired against us?
Rather well. They have millions of men and far more drive, and we have yet to get more bombs.

would Patton have been able to pull off a massive victory and crush the Soviet Union?
No.
would the US be stuck in a stagnent war that just kept draining resources like a big Vietnam?
Yes.

would We have nuked them?
We wouldn't have enough nukes, but probably. Though the planes would be shot from the sky.

Would Cuba, North Korea, or Vietnam become communist states?
If the Space bats got into Truman's head, who knows what leader could have been next and said "f**k it, we're going Commie."

If we crushed the Soviets how would history have changed and what would the modern world look like? Ect....
I'm thinking nuclear wastes.

Yes.

Usually when the OP has about 7 questions, the word yes does not correctly assess them. Good effort though.

On to the question at hand. Such a task was labeled "OPERATION UNTHINKABLE" It was just that. This wouldn't be WW 2.5 this would be World War 3. The general consensus from what I've seen of other threads like this is that the Allies manage to win due to Soviets not having inexhaustible manpower compared to America who had not even begun to stretch her muscles, and the fact that they had a monopoly on the atomic bomb for 4 more years. While none were ready at the conclusion of WW2, the Soviets sure thought we had more and we didn't let them think different. It would take ASB level intervention to get a adequate cassus belli for a war however. The post world would be so different I could not even sort through the butterflies. But suffice to say if the USSR loses, not many states will be going Communist. It wouldn't be viable.

Well, maybe I should have been gentler on the newbie.

@General_Finley - apologies, good sir. I'm sure your next topic will be more answerable.

no need to apologies I should have done more reasearch befor I posted it, it is just I have a kind of a hero worship thing for General Patton and I wanted to know if he could have pulled it off. Oh and do you know if someone has already posted a topic on a Hitler not invading Poland?

The germans placed more resources and efforts in the east and also were more reluctant to surrrender, so when putton crossed the oder he would of found the enemy far tougher than before.

Also remember the germans had their successes when Stalin had purged the army and thought he knew better than professional soldiers. Once Stalin let the likes of ZHukov run things the Red Army learnt how to win.

The red army may retreat to the Vistua and behond but would still have been well motivated to defend the motherland and then retake lost ground. Dropping Nukes would be difficult due to distances.

For this to work the US army would have to listen to advice from the German Army on how the soviets fight what works etc. Something that from past History and latter events has shown the USA reluctant to do

My two cents: It'd be a bad idea since the Soviets had not yet done anything to provoke the attack, and after years of fighting Japan and Axis Europe, the G.I.s were ready to come home, and not looking for another war.

Militarily, the Soviet war effort would have fell apart at the seams. Politically however, it would have been very difficult to convince the public to commit to a total war against a country which had been built up through constant propoganda as staunch allies with the United States against evil Nazism.

When does it happen ? If its in the middle of the war - ie Patton goes for Prague, kicks Commie ass, and pushes on, then three-cornered wars don't last long before two of the sides join together... You could have ended up with Nazi Lite allied to Western Allies fighting the Soviets, and at home the authorities are going to be having SERIOUS problems keeping a lid on people who are fed up of war and want to know why we're fighting Uncle Joe, especially if doing it with the help of someone like Goering or Himmler !

Best Regards

I'll give you a break cuz you're new here, but this has been discussed before, for more information on this see Operation Unthinkable.

Among MANY other threads.

Ther numbers are legion, however, as compensation, they do create the most lovely arguments.:D

Why would you direct a new forum member to the Operatioin Unthinkable thread? I was here for months before stumbling upon it, and it still left me gasping for sanity.

I know it's a mistake but the first thought that came to my head when I saw this was a cross between Patton and Putin....scary stuff.

General_Finley,
Welcome to the forums. There are a lot of topics on Hitler not invading Poland. Search for Poland and Germany in the After 1900 section.

Oh, about General Patton. This place has a habit of tearing down the standard heroes. Then new ones are erected in their place.
