The Empire Parnell Built

Sumatra is a single federation
What is this federation like? Is it still secularist or is how Aceh amongst the more Islamic parts of Indonesia IOTL led to Sumatra being the closest thing to an Islamic Republic ITTL (presumably more like Pakistan than Iran)?

Yes, I imagined that Sumatra is TTL's Pakistan

Bali is its own weird little federation and the rest of Java is divided into an expanded Yogakarta Sultanate and a federation. Borneo is divided into various sultanates; Sumatra is a single federation; Sulawesi and the Sunda Islands are in another federation together; Papua and West Papua are part of a wider Melanesian Federation. As you can see, these are kind of based on the proposed states for the OTL United States of Indonesia in 1945, with a few tweaks. This represents that there were still significant anti-colonialist forces without the influence of nationalism and communism in the same way.

All of these countries TTL are considered part of Oceania rather than Asia, so they'll show up when I do lists of economies for that continent at some point.
Oh a federation of java under yogyakarta? Interesting btw do they have claim to maybe lampung and some part of borneo since if i remember correctly they are a territory under the mataram sultanate also im guessing this javan federation is quite wealthy? Or atleast upper middle income? Since the java island is the most industrialised in all of the former DEI and not to mention the mines there also btw what is the flag?

Economically, it's doing pretty fine: a large population and a decent secondary industry will do that for you. In terms of per capita wealth you're probably looking at something close to an OTL North African country like Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco.

So a very fragile and unstable nation?
Harsh way of putting it but, yes: it's TTL's primary example of an Islamic republic with significant tensions and difficulty navigating between the secular and the religious.

Interesting does immigration an issue in this federation? Since sumatra like you mention is having a bad time
Btw does bali ever has any attempt to join this federation? Since if going by the USI state map then bali should be grouped with sulawesi (though i suggest giving it to java since it is much closer and probably has a lot of economic ties)

And i would guess aceh dominated the politics and sharia law is prevelant and the oil fields are one of their source of revenue

For the most part Pasundan doesn't mind receiving cheap Sumatran labour and Sumatra is greatly helped by their remittances but migrants are often used as a bargaining chip in disagreements between the two countries.

Sumatra isn't quite a petrostate but oil is very important to the economy, yes, not just as a source of revenue but also as a way of creating a nexus of corruption and relationships which bind the ruling class together. Its legal system is Sharia but with influences of the colonial Dutch civil code.

What Chen Yi helped Heydrich and his friends? The PRC general or the KMT general?
The PRC general. TTL the survival of the reformed Chinese imperial state means he enters the mainstream military instead of turning to communism.

What exactly lead to China getting involved? Just desire for influence?
Basically that's it. Within China, there's still a lot of turmoil under the surface following the death of the Guangxu Emperor, with different factions battling for influence. So if you're a member of the militarist clique, a quick little victory in Africa is useful boost for your side.

What about java? Im guessing because they are industrialised they also wouldnt mind (well tbf any nation ittl indonesia wouldnt mind cheap labour to boost their industry with borneo in coal, java in industry and maybe papua in gold)

That is always a recipe for disaster with oil being very important and sharia law is enacted (kinda sound like the middle eastern stuff) also what is sumatra relation with malaya/whatever is malaya ittl

TBH if Pakistan did not have the Northwest Frontier Province (and an out of control military intelligence establishment) it would be considerably less problematic, does Sumartra have an equivilent surely not. It should be at least somewhat better off. .

The provinces of OTL Peninsular Malaya are all separate independent sultanates, while Penang, Singapore and Malacca are Crown Dependencies in the British Empire. Sarawak is an independent kingdom and Sabah is part of Sulu. (The idea being that decolonisation in a world with a less influential nationalist and communist movements leads to the 'traditional rulers' retaining their powers.) In practice, they all have pretty close relationships with each other and with neighbouring countries like Indochina.

I'm not as negative about Pakistan and/or Sumatra as some other people on this site are. My point about Sumatra would be that it's still very much a developing economy and probably a bit too reliant on its oil reserves for its own good. Although Islamist parties do well, they're hardly the Taliban and tend to pick their battles: if you walk around somewhere like Medan you'd find a pretty cosmopolitan city where you can buy a beer and the women aren't wearing headscarves, but that won't be the case in the countryside or the smaller cities and towns.
