Ehh. Reagan or Ford or Rockefeller would probably be the GOP nominee, and I see either Carter/Church/Udall taking the Democratic nomination, and Reagan/Ford/Rockefeller either wins with 315-400 EVs and somewhere between 50%-55% of the popular vote.

Like I said above, Rockefeller was screwed by this point in time. Him against Carter would just be asking to get bible thumped to death.

Reagan nearly won the nomination in 1976 against a sitting president Ford. With no Watergate, Reagan is the nominee and wins the general.

Still, without him, the GOP probably wins.

I can't see the GOP winning in 76. People would be tried of the Republicans, and the GOP still have to face the affects of Nam, Counterculture, the rise in crime, the War on Drugs, the oil crisis, the recession. People was already losing faith in the government without Watergate, and would what a charge in government.

Other Dems are Lloyd Bentsen, Udall, Birch Bayh, Gary Hart, Sargent Shriver, Frank Church, John Glenn. Jimmy Carter could be a VP.

(And Ford is unlikey to be VP. That would go to either George H. W. Bush, Jack Kemp, John Connally.

On the other hand, the GOP could win, and do better (No Watergate, No Ford giving Nixon a pardon, Nixon term ending on a high note with a better economy.), but we see the Dems back in the White House for 1980. Better to have the Dems win, suffer a failed administration, and see a Republican landslide for the 1980s. Like Edward Brooke to make the GOP the party of Civil Rights again.

Yeah. The Democrats would obviously win in either 1980 or 1984, but a think a GOP victory would be a strong probability.

I mean the GOP winning in 1980 and 1984 with the Dems winning in 76 and get screw over by the rest of the 1970s with Iran and Afghanistan as cherries on top.

Yeah. I do the whole hostage crisis would fare better under a GOP President, especially one with heavy foreign policy experience.
