Edmund, Earl of Rutland was killed trying to escape after the Yorkists were defeated at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460. What if he manages to escape?
Within a few months of Wakefield Rutland's older brother has taken the throne as Edward IV. What role would he play in his brother's reign? He's only a year younger than Edward and at this stage would be first in line to the throne.
How would he react to his brother's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville? Would he eventually side with Warwick against his brother, as their younger brother Clarence did in OTL? Or would he remain loyal to Edward? If he does remain loyal to Edward how valuable an ally is Clarence to Warwick? In this timeline he isn't the next male heir of York.
If Rutland does remain loyal and events play out in a similar fashion to the OTL, with the Yorkist victories at Barnet and Tewkesbury, when Edward IV dies in 1483 Rutland, not Gloucester, would find himself Lord Protector to the young Edward V. Perhaps he does things differently than Gloucester did in OTL, or perhaps we just end up with King Edmund I instead of King Richard III.
Presumably if Rutland survives he would be made Duke of Somewhere during his brother's reign, Duke of Bedford perhaps?
