The Dragon's Breath, The Eagle's Wrath: The Second Pacific War

Excerpts From Words of Battle: A Collection of Quotes of The Second Pacific War

"It is today, August 18th, 1963, at 4:38 PM Eastern Time, that the United States Of America declares a state of war with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Should The People's Republic of China choose to intervene on the side of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, a state of war will be declared in turn. Citizens of the United States, the die has been cast. When history remembers our battle against the dark forces of Communism, let them remember the free nations of the world saying in one voice: We will not go into the night! We will live on to battle for freedom and prosperity!" -
President of the United States Micheal Vincent DiSalle

"As of August 21st, 1963, the People's Republic of China declares hostilities with the imperialists of the United States of America. Comrades, Workers and Peasants of All countries, it is now that we must unite and defeat the capitalist oppressors once and for all! Long live the international Revolution!"
-Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong

"It has been decided by the Central Commitee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union that if the revisionists and the imperialists wish to bleed the soil red with their blood, they will do it without the aid of the Soviet people. Presuming nuclear weapons do not come into play, as of August 23rd, 1963, The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics declares a state of neutrality in the conflict between the Chinese and Americans." -Communist Party Chairman Nikita Khrushchev

"Although the Americans have superior firepower, they are no match for us in the jungles of the Vietnamese Highlands. They are noisy, uncoordinated, and reckless. They cannot defeat us." -Unnamed People's Liberation Army soldier in North Vietnam

"We heard the sounds of Whistles and Sirens, and for a moment I thought we were going to be facing another one of the PLA's Short Attacks. What I didn't expect was the entire southern slope and valley beneath to stand up in a sea of khaki clad soldiers. The artillery and air support mowed them down, but thousands more kept coming. We weren't expecting this kind of attack from them. It turns out the stories from Korea may have had a ring of truth." -Corporal Mark Rosenthal,1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, United States Army, stationed temporarily in Taiwan

"In the two years this damned war has gone on, the Americans have lost over Three Hundred Thousand men, the Koreans and other allies One Hundred Fifty Thousand, and the Chinese several times that combined number. And now, Britain is being pressured into sending troops to this killing zone. Good God in heaven, when will this war end?" -British Prime Minister Harold Wilson

"Despite the sheer amount of death and destruction occurring in Asia as of late, I cannot help but feel there are even bigger problems to address at home. Because of this crusade against Communism and the radical left, I fear that the table of brotherhood will not be set for many years to come." -Martin Luther King Jr.

More to come.......

Awesome. I'm not really into war TLs, but this looks pretty interesting. I'm staying tune.

Great to see some friendly faces.

And yes, it will be half-politics,not just combat:

The Bulldog will be handling the Politics, while your main man Deleon will be handling the Battles.

How does direct Chinese intervention in Vietnam not end with the Americans nuking China? It's not like the Chinese can stop them from doing so. And Khrushchev sure as hell won't risk nuclear war for China at this point.

Weapons and pilots. Those Vietnamese MiGs had Russian pilots in them. "Neutral" is laughable. Scion flashes in East Asia: More at 11.

So? The Soviets were not an official belligerent during the Korean War yet they still sent pilots.

And there were no Soviet pilots in the Vietnam War. Anti-Aircraft missile instructors were based there, but that's it.

Largely because the Soviet Union is still officially allied with China in 1963 (despite ideological differences and the declaration of neutrality) and the USA nuking an ally of the USSR will make them look weak.

Wasn't the Sino-Soviet split known by now? As for looking weak, I doubt nukes would do that. If anything, it sends the signal that the US can squash anybody no matter what tactics they use. The US leadership would be stupid to engage in a guerrilla conflict with an enemy that has an endless manpower supply.

The Sino-Soviet Split was at it's height in 1969.

In 1961 the Soviets were formally denounced but they weren't established as being enemies until later.

Even then despite the intense dislike of each other, the USSR is still taking China over America at this point and nukes will push them over the edge, especially since the nation launching the nukes is the USSR's mortal enemy and largest capitalist power.

As for the "guerrilla conflict" this TL isn't aiming for a decisive victory a la WW2 and it's not a Vietnam-style guerrilla war.

Nukes don't get used because they would obliterate everyone, making for a pretty crap story. If you want a better explanation, than we'll get to one in due course in the TL.

It's still pretty dumb to engage in a guerrilla war against an opponent with a near limitless supply of men.
