The Dixiecrat Revolt

WI the Southern Democrats had followed through on their threat to oppoe Truman in 1948 and held their own convention to nominate Strom Thurmond? Would the famous newspaper headline that predicted a Dewey win have been right after all?

What would have been the effect on the Democratic Party? I'm guessing an earlier North/South split over civil rights, and the South going Republican in the Sixties.

Didn't they really hold a convention for their own candidate who was Strom Thrumond who opposed Truman in the 1948 election in real history?

Perhaps he means an even stronger Dixiecrat Party winning one or two more states, taking away the popular vote else where and thus giving Dewey the election.
