The Dixiecrat party wins the 1948 US elections

Not going to happen. The Dixiecrats had no appeal outside of the South (in fact they were only on the ballot in the South), and they only won in the 4 states where Strom Thurmond was listed as the main Democratic nominee, not as a third party candidate. In fact the Dixiecrats' strategy was to draw enough votes away from Truman and throw the election to the House or get Dewey to win, giving them more leverage in the Democratic Party.

How would they win? They didn't attempt to win any other state except the south, and alone they can win them the election. Their only hope would be to throw it to the house, but there's no way in hell anybody outside of the south would vote for them

Then what?

They wouldn't. Even in 1948, there weren't enough dedicated racists to be able to elect a guy like Strom Thurmond into national office.....he might have won the old South, and maybe Texas besides, but even IOTL, Truman outperformed him by a country mile.

And even if he'd run on the regular Democratic ticket instead, he'd have instead lost to Tom Dewey, and maybe in a near landslide at that. Hell, even Henry Wallace would probably win versus him!

Might want to move this to ASB because this could be an interesting discussion if somehow, everyone woke to learn that Strom Thurmond is President Elect.

Let's say that a miracle happens, they win in all the southern states and manage to take power by a small margin, what would happen after that?

Even if the Dixiecrats win all of the southern states, that's still not enough electoral votes to win the presidency.

Even if they win all the Southern states that's 146 electoral votes. They need 266 EVs to win. So they still aren't going to win.

They ran (or got written in) in some other states, like California and North Dakota. Still, unlike Truman, Dewey and Wallace, they didn't run in most states.

The only way I see this happening is if the Republicans and Democrats both run two candidates because of disastrous conventions, making it a five way race where the Dixiecrats hold serve in the South and win in the House.
