The development of an Iran that doesn't fully become Muslim?

If there was a scenario to the invasion of Persia that played out more like the Indian subcontinent where the muslim invaders were successful in their conquering of the lands but the majority of the population still retained their native religions?

So an Iran/Persia with a continued Zoroastrian majority.

Or perhaps with a larger Nestorian Christian (more correctly, the Church of the East) minority, since Nestorian Christianity was making inroads into Persia - and not just Mesopotamia, where a lot of such Christians lived - by the time of the Muslim conquest.

Excuse my ignorance, but this is my shot:

If a different Abbasid Revolution played out, we could see the emergence of more autonomous Zoroastrian polities. One POD that you might find interesting is what if the Tang Emperor mounted an expedition against the Ummayads as the King of Shash in Central Asia requested, by 741. A sucessful Chinese incursion could weaken both the "Arabist" Ummayads and the Abbasids, the later who would begin their revolution in ten years, opening way for more autonomy, at least until the arrival of the Turks and Mongols (if they come, ofc).
