What is this?
Its an alternate timeline about the 2008 elections in the United States and its impact on the world
Oh, okay. So I guessing the GOP doesn't do so good. Correct?
Yes, its a much greater loss. Nearly everyone in the US expected a Democratic victory to be different then OTL. I will explore one option.
When is it going to start?
Right Now....

2007
President Bush is woken up at around 3 in the mourning. He is told a US spy plane has been shot over Iran. It also appears that Iran is mobilizing their air force and has been put on high alert. Bush orders all US military forces to go on DefCon worldwide and US troops in Iraq to go on high alert. He calls British PM Tony Blair about what is going on in the Middle East.
It is unclear on what happened next. Soon shooting started on the Iraq-Iran border. Both the US and Iran moves more troops into the area and soon its a bloodbath. Iran has had more weapons in the area and was prepared for this. The US suffered heavy losses.
Around 7 in the mourning, the public is now aware with CNN, FOX, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, BBC, and Al Jazerra covering live coverage. The UN declares an emergency ceasefire as diplomats from both countries discuss by phone though the Swiss Embassy.
Fighting stops around 3 in the afternoon, the fighting only last about 12 hours. But the US has around 300 KIA and another 300 wounded. It is one of the worst losses in US military history. Iran has gained a huge moral victory by defeating the ''Great Satan''. In the US, the public and congress are furious. Even more so when a leaked memo shows that Vice President Cheney demanded that they launch a full invasion of Iran.
The heavy loss is horrible for the weak economy. Within days, the stock market crashes like the Titanic. The Down Jones goes down over 2000 points causing the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression.
Democrats now control both houses of congress and want Bush to pay. They refuse to Bush. Without government help, the economy crashes even more. It is now called the Second Great Depression and spreads around the world. Most of the blame goes to the GOP.

Does Iran really have a chance to ambush the US? I can't imagine that a buildup on the border wouldn't be noticed and 2007 was when the surge took place, there were something like 150,000 American soldiers there. I tend to think any convential fight with Iran is going to be pretty lopsided. Also if the Iranians started it or if it's in doubt I think the US will do more than just spin its wheels, there will probably be retailitory strikes throughout the country.

2008 Part 1
While the economy and the nation on it's knees, it was time to elect a new president. First the parties had to select a candidate. It has been clear since early 2006, even 2004, that the front runners where former First Lady and New York Senator Hillary Clinton and Illinois senator Barack Obama. Senator John Edwards from North Carolina and Vice President candidate during 2004 was also leading. Joe Biden, Al Gore, John Kerry, and Bill Richardson were also named.

Even though Clinton started as the main frontrunner, the economy collapse hurt her badly. Obama went after her ties to Wall Street and support for the Iraq War. Her support faded quickly, and Obama easily won in Iowa. Soon Jack Edwards was caught in an affair schedule and he was forced to withdraw from the race. Obama won ever other state and became the presumptive nominee very early on. He spent this time campaigning across the nation and meeting with people.

The Republicans were a different story. Although John McCain, senator from Arizona, was the front runner he had a fight on his hands. Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and Ron Paul all joined in. Huckabee ran as an economic canidate, Romney on his business record, McCain on his experience and war record, and Paul as a Washington outsider. After the economic collapse mass protests and riots broke out in New York City. Wall Street was the main target and so were major business leaders. Romney had horrible polling and dropped out after Iowa which Huckabee won. McCain won New Hampshire, but Huckabee the next few states. The McCain campaign team went negative and the primary turned nasty.

It looked like Michael Huckabee would win but he was shot by an anarchist and withdrew. But he refused to endorse McCain.
