The Daughter of the Lionhearted

I

In a certain point in time in 1195, Berengaria stated that she did not like Conrad of Swabia and wanted to marry Alfonso of Leon, however, Richard had other ideas and have Conrad of Swabia marry Eleanor of Brittany who was once betrothed to Frederick of Austria, he thought of marrying Berengaria to the future King of Aragon.

On 1196, Richard I of England wanted to make an alliance with Aragon and set his intention about having Berengaria of Castile married to Peter of Aragon instead of having Berengaria married to Conrad of Swabia or Alfonso of Leon and that the marriage plans between Raymond of Toulouse and Joan of England get cancelled, since the marriage pact between Berengaria and Conrad has been signed, Richard I gave another bride to replace her – Eleanor of Brittany, the marriage arrangement between Eleanor of Brittany has been rushed in order to break the betrothal between Berengaria and Conrad of Swabia.

The marriage between Conrad of Swabia and Eleanor of Brittany happened in 1196 instead breaking the betrothal between Berengaria and Conrad and at the same year Berengaria of Castile married Peter III the Catholic giving Berengaria the Plantagenet claims to Toulouse and Provence.

The King of England had another marriage in mind and that is for the son of the Duke of Burgundy, and married Eudes III of Burgundy to Alice of Blois the younger which happened in 1197, because he wanted to marry originally, Eleanor of Brittany.

On 1197, Berengaria of Navarre is suddenly pregnant and suddenly gives birth to a daughter on 1198, named Eleanor, the birth was long waited for Berengaria and Richard, the birth was said to be a miracle.

Constance of Brittany divorced Ranulf de Blondeville on 1199, due to grounds of desertion and she married Guy de Thouars.

Constance, the Duchess of Brittany gave birth to twin sons, Conan and Alan on 1201 with Guy de Thouars, which means Arthur of Brittany would have another male heir to Brittany, she would die a few months after the birth of her twins due to complications.

On 1199, Richard the Lionheart was killed by an Archer accidentally and John I succeeds, on this time, Philip of Cognac had married a French heiress, Amelia of Cognac, the wife of Richard, Berengaria and her daughter flees to the court of Sancho, in this time Sancho of Navarre married Urraca of Castile who he intercepted while Eleanor of Aquitaine travelled to France which forced Eleanor of Aquitaine to pick Blanche of Castile as the wife of the future French King in order for John I to secure his own reign, however those plans will be derailed because Sancho of Navarre has a plan to marry the young Eleanor of England to the French King himself and for that reason, Sancho of Navarre himself has a plan for the downfall of John.

However, Eleanor of Aquitaine wanted a match between Theobald of Navarre and Eleanor the Younger which is not considered by Sancho.

There has been a treaty wherein Blanche of Castille should marry Louis, the son of Philippe Auguste, however the treaty will not be signed and as for Blanche, she would instead marry Valdemar of Denmark.

Due to John’s noncompliance and marriage to Isabella of Angouleme, he has been considered his inheritance from his father revoked and his lands given to Arthur of Brittany and the betrothal between Eleanor of Guyenne, the daughter of Richard the Lionhearted and Louis has been confirmed.

In 1202 Arthur I of Brittany and Hugh of Marche would march against John in Mirabeau, however, Arthur would be captured and killed by John’s barons, his heir to Brittany is his brother Alan, while in England and the Plantagenet lands it would be Eleanor of Guyenne, Eleanor of Brittany would give birth to her first child named Constance of Swabia on 1203, named after her mother, she would be treated less harm by John compared to Eleanor of Guyenne.
