The Dahlgren Affair was an incident during the American Civil War in which papers were found on US Army Col. Ulric Dahlgren instructing him to assistance President Jefferson Davis and other high ranking leaders of the Confederacy in Richmond. The raid ended with a failed attempt to liberate a PoW camp outside of the Confederate capital during which Col. Dahlgren was killed and the Dahlgren Papers were found. The incident outraged many in the Confederacy but was largely ignored as Confederate propaganda in the North and in Europe.
What kind of impact would the raid succeeding in assassinating President Davis and/or high ranking members of his cabinet, the CSA, and the CSN? Might it tip the British and French into loosening restrictions on arms sales to the CSA and lead to economic and political reprisals against the US, possibly even an attempt to mediate an end to the war? Could it impact the outcome of the 1864 elections?
