The Czech-German War: 1938-January 1939

What if Czechoslovakia had decided to fight The Germans over Sudetenland.

It is very unlkely that Czechoslovakia would fight, after having been told by their allies, the French, that they wouldn't be getting any help.

But let's suppose they do fight. They turn down the German ultimatum and issue a formal request for help to their allies, the French and the Soviets, to help them as soon as the Germans violate the border.

So you have a clear branching here. The Soviets' commitments don't come due if the French ones don't. The British have no commitments. It all depends on the French. Do you think they'll fight? Do you want them to? Or not? It's a major difference. The story of the Czechoslovakian defiance will be short and sad if they are all alone.

Germany looses! Even in Sept. 39 the re-armament process was very far from complete. Without the captured czech equipment the Wehrmacht will be "naked". After the Sudetenland was handed over german Generals inspected the fortifications at the borders and the czech weapons and concluded they could not have broken through.

Well, I am one of the believe that the czechs could give nasty surprises to the german army but I have to say that although initially the first german plans was intended in broke the fortifications in Bohemia as principal manouver, the final plan made a more realistic thinking about the czech fortifications and made as principal manouver an attack from Austria and Germany in the middle zone of Czechoslovakia (through mountains using the very professional alpine austrian divisions) once get to dominate the mountanous zones of the center and with the air in control of the Luftwaffe the germans had launched an all attack from the rear in direction to Prague.

Secondary operations had been launched against fortifications line in Sudetenland, surely there would hard combats in the fortifications line but it had not been the principal front of attack of the germans.

What did the Luftwaffe have? Production of Me 109E fighters started at the end of 38, the He 111 was in production for just a few months, same goes for the Ju 87B. not much, the Austrians better be worth a lot more than they get paid.

If you go to this thread you will probably find that this issue was beaten to bloody pulp. There is also a great deal of information on OOB (including size of the Czech Army vs. the Heer), production numbers of armor, aircraft details, etc.
