So, while pondering various North American TLs and PODs in the 20th century that involve Mexico, my mind is always brought back to the Cristero War, a rather bloody and controversial civil war in Mexico that really doesn't seem to get a whole lot of mention in history books outside of Mexico.

IIRC, the Cristeros were actually beginning to win (or at least gain the upper hand) in the war before the US ambassador stepped in and "mediated" a peace between the Cristeros and the government.

So, all you Latin American experts out there (lookin' at you, maverick;)), how could the Cristeros have won the Cristero War and what do you think the ramifications of this would be, both inside and outside of Mexico?
