The control of New Amsterdam

In 1664 Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant ceded control of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam to the English.
Suppose the English do not obtain control of New Amsterdam. What happens then?

Not sure how long the Dutch can hang on;

Not sure how long the Dutch can hang on; even if the British don't take over in the 1660s, the reality is they have extensive claims north and south, and a lot more population (in the UK and, in perspective, in New England and points south) and the Dutch have a few other issues on their plate.

And New York, given the upper and lower bays, Long Island Sound, and the East and Hudson rivers, is pretty much the spot when it comes to simple movement into the backcountry of the Hudson River Valley, and from there to the Mohawk and Genesee, and from there to the Lakes, and from there etc etc etc.

The question is why wouldn't the British take over?

Best,
