Well, I posted a challenge to AH.com: make Franklin Pierce one of the greatest US Presidents. Sadly, Pierce was a mediocre man, and nobody's come up with any scenario that doesn't involve ASBs to get him out of that slump. Someone, however, suggested that the Civil War breaks out on his watch. I pointed out that Pierce was a "doughface", a Northerner with Southern sympathies. And that got me thinking: what is the South had left the Union on Pierce's watch?
Somehow, I can't see Pierce doing what Lincoln did in OTL. Again, he had sympathy for the South, and he was a really mediocre kind of man. I had a vague idea that the anti-Confederates would form their own nation, splitting the US in three. But what would really happen, do you think?
