Excerpt from A Time to Heal by Gerald R. Ford, circa 1979

"I remember, it was in San Francisco. Seventeen days after the incident at Sacramento. I don't know why I didn't just go back to Washington and stay there.

"Anyway, this time it was Sarah Moore. I was walking down, toward the car, when the shots were fired. The Secret Service men took no time to valiantly defend me, of course.

"After a minute, they noticed that there was blood. It wasn't bad, the bullet sort of scraped my shoulder. The doctors cleaned it up very nicely.

"But, well, this was the second time in two weeks. And this time, it was closer. You can imagine I didn't feel too good after it, even though I was physically in decent health despite it all.

"So, on the way back home, we worked on the plane. The day after I got back, I went on television, and I told the American people that I was proud and honored to serve them.

"And that I would not run in 1976."
