The Canadian Caribbean

I read once it was proposed that the Caribbean islands of Britain join Canada.

They didn't, rather they formed two short lived federations that died, and ended up with the current small island states we know.

Suppose however Canada annexed them during the 1960s.

Some became provinces others remained territories. While some formed autonomas commonwealth status states.

Canada would probably have a much larger navy.

Somewhere to go during the winter.

But what about the politics the addition of these would change the nature of Canada. However in what ways?

Would Canada be stronger or weaker in the long run?

A POD would of been that following WWII Britain under great economic and financial strain transfers all Carribean possessions to Canada in return for Canadian cancelling all British Debt plus taking over all British obligations.

Canadian navy at time 3rd largest is repurposed to defend new Canadian provinces.

Canada announces full citizenship to all residents of islands.

Five provinces are to be created. Guiana, Trinidad, lesser Antilles (comprising of all Canadian islands north of Trinidad), Jamaica (include cayman and Belize), and Bahamas to include Turks islands. Bermuda to remain a separate territory.

US objects to the deal but does nothing to stop it.

Because the US would view Canadian meddling as counter to their economic control of region.

I don't know, I'm not sure the US sees this as all that big of a deal. US hyper-dominance in the area is already secure.

One possible military butterfly is that this is a boon for the Canadian Navy going forward due to the need for them to patrol and secure a wider geographic area. This is a good thing for NATO and the RCN.
