The Broken Colonies

Written by alexsio03

The world of British North America was doused in infamy. American militias dying for independence have risen up all along the coastline, and it seems that it will be a tough fight for the British Empire. After a victory in the 7 Years War has left them in deep debt, they use their last resources to fight the rebellions starting up in the colonies. It is clear from the beginning in Lexington the colonies are nothing more that men and teens with guns fighting a well-trained and all mighty army. Although the colonists have good aim and have struck down some of the British men, it is clear the war will end quickly and with minimal casualties for the British. Britain had begun with 2 easy wins, and a unexpected battle, but another victory. The Battle of Trenton had truly tested the British. After General William Howe left New Jersey thinking they had driven all the patriots out of that state, it was Lieutenant Broderick Leigh with his 4,000 men who decided to stay back to protect their hold on New Jersey. They took a chance staying there, and to many of the British soldiers disappointment, they stayed up on Christmas night keeping alert for any signs of patriots. The Hessian mercenaries of course disobeyed, and decided to drink and party, and later fall into deep sleep. It was at midnight when George Washington and his 2,400 men rowed across the Delaware River. Even as the British were staying awake and alert, they were caught off guard as many of them were half-asleep. George Washington’s men quickly fired upon the drowsy British soldiers, trying to get as many of them down as soon as possible. The British fired back, but not nearly fast enough. The British began firing once the first lines of Americans had already reloaded and after 500 of their men had already died. The Hessians, half-hungover, half-asleep, ran out of their tents and joined their British troops. Although the British had more men, the Americans were prepared and ready for a fight. The fight ended in a considerable victory towards the Americans. As the Americans fell back, Broderick knew his actions would result in his execution for the foolish actions and loss of lives in this defeat. He quickly stripped his uniform, and put on one of the dead American’s uniforms behind a tent. He then proceeded to head down the riverbank away from the town. He headed along the bank until reached the woods, where he sat down and rested at the bottom of the tree. He sat quietly and examined his uniform. He saw on the inside of the coat, a familiar name. It wrote George Washington, General. He smiled, and gave a quiet laugh into the night.
