The British Raj - Post 1918

The British Indian Army based on numbers was one of the largest participants in The Great War. Over one million men served over seas in Asia, the Western Front and the Middle East. While their service was not stellar it was important and often over looked.

Is it possible for the British Indian Army to have done better? How will this effect post war independence movements. Or does Britain find ways to bring the British Raj closer and a more important part of colonial defense?

What are your thoughts?

They were very light on equipment. If you have a POD where they are equipped better, they will fight a lot better. Artillery and Machine guns are badly needed.

My grandmother recently revealed that one of my great-grand uncles was with the Indian Army at Basra in the Mesopotamian campaign so this is an interesting bit of history for me.

As the previous poster pointed out, the Indian Army was in many ways underequipped for the battles it had to fight

Often the equipment arrived as they were leaving. Indian Expeditionary Force B received their machine guns while in transit to East Africa. There first use was at Tanga.

Flocculencio - Do you know which unit? The Mesopotamian campaign is of great interest to me.

No idea which unit or in what capacity. Its a bit odd since we weren't considered a martial caste so its a bit unusual that my great uncle should have been in the Army.

Well, had the war lasted into 1919, British India was to have taken full control over the Mesopotamian Front, according to a book I read. This would have had a huge effect on the developing self-rule movement in India.
