Today we remember the dreadful Boston Massacre of July 4th 1785.
Pictured above is a rare surviving notice of execution from the end of the American Rebellion that year. The original can be seen on display in the American Imperial War Museum in Boston.
The dreadful punishment advertised for the leader of the rebellion was not actually carried out fully as he was hung until dead. This was only the beginning of the Terror to which the colonies were subjected following their defeat. The worst massacre, at Boston, took place on the anniversary of the declaration of independence.
This year the monarchs of the three North American nations will join together for the first time to commemorate the massacre: Emperor Diaz of Mexico, Chief Natowa of West India and of course his Majesty King George the Seventh in his position as Head of State of Canada, into which the 13 rebelling colonies were integrated in the 19th Century.
