The Bolsheviks Spreading The 'World Revolution'

French intervention

Now with the Soviets reaching Vienna and preparing to threaten Germany, French politicians had the option of watching things go by or defeating the German Empire and diverting attention from the Eastern Front of the revolutionary war. The same could be stated of British politicians, but fear of communism threatening the empire would bring them closer to their former nemesis of the Great War and terms of the previous treaty were quite lenient compared with other defeated Entente members. Anyway, they were allies and had the objective of containing Germany while defeating communism in Europe. Even French ambitions had the aim of retaking lost territory while preventing them from falling into the hands of a communist Germany.

The French Army was mobilised and put on alert in the event action was necessary although another world war after a few years of peace was unpalatable after defeat and futile sacrifices. As long as the nation retook Alsace-Lorraine from its partly reduced territories, the Germans might be forced to surrender. Regardless of absurdity, Germans would be treated leniently after capture in anticipation for the future conflict against the Soviet Union. The decided beginning of the offensive was to initiate in March 1923, after the anticipated fall of Vienna and withdrawal of German troops from the west.

Then, the unanticipated occurred.
