The Boers of New Holland

I was looking at an old thread in respect to Australia whereby it was suggested that if the British succeeded in the American War of Independence their focus would have remained upon North America leaving the Dutch to essentially colonize "New Holland" as an extension of the Dutch East Indies (and possibly, in part, by the French for strategic purposes).

I know the butterflies are awesome in this alternate scenario however my question is simply this, where do you think the convict colony would have ended up if the Brit's did not have their "Down Under Dumping Ground".

I agree. Interesting. In this ATL the Brits may still be struggling to contain North America. France and Holland had also made claims to parts of Australia yet could not back them up against a Britain who had now focussed its energies elsewhere after losing its American colonies.

A part of the Dutch problem was that though the Dutch were the first Europeans to discover most parts of Australia, most of these areas were seen as uninteresting by the VOC, which as one of first great global companies was only interested in making profit. Another issue is demographics the Republic wasn't that big and the population wasn't that large, however it did have one of highest populations per square miles (or km);).

And even IOTL the Republic also had settlers from different countries like Huguenots (French Calvinists), protestants from the Southern Netherlands including Walloons and Germans etc.

I like the idea though, but maybe it would require to keep the XVII Netherlands (Republic & Spanish Netherlands) united.

Regarding the British convict colony, maybe it will be in Canada?
