The Black Prince Does Dot Fall Ill?

What if Edward the Black Prince had not had the disease that caused his death? He was sick for many years before he died in 1376. Could the French reconquest of Aquitaine have been prevented with such an excellent battle commander in charge? What would his reign in England have looked like?

Really depends on the French. Edward's poor administration skills are likely to lead to further Aquitane revolts which will in turn draw the attention of the French court. If they meet him head on in battle Edward has a chance to crush resistance (and reimpose a favourable treaty), but if they avoid an army to army clash and adopt a more incremental strategy, I think the Prince's strength will ebb away.

One very interesting butterfly would be how Richard's personality develops with his father around, and the minority kingship avoided.

I agree. I'm not really a big fan of Edward anyway. As for Richard, he's basically crazy and having his father live longer won't really matter in the long run.

Well if you want to keep the french conquests and not just Edward alive really need to butterfly away the Castillian campaign somehow. The financial havoc it created was the main reason they never got the chance to stick. Charles V mainly seized the opportunity created by the discontent of raising revenues to snatch them back, no real brilliant strategy required.

Yes, I agree, if you could prevent the Castilian/ Najéra campaign, then there is no financial difficulty for the French to seize upon. However, to do that one would have to change Edward's personality or the facts on the ground vis-à-vis the Castilian Civil War.

Also, Could a moderator change the "Dot" to "Not" in the title of this thread?

Prevent the marriage between John of Gaunt and Constance of Castile but who would be the lucky man who marries Constance?
