The Best Britain Can Be

With a POD after 1800s, what's the strongest position Britain can be in before the alternate WW1 (if there is a WW1).

Wrong forum. You have a 1800's POD in the After 1900 Forum.

Anyway, one way would be to have Germany be unable to unify. I guess you could have the French aid the Austrians against the Prussians in 1866. This may stop the German Empire and Britain may get German what was German lands of Kamerun and East Africa during the Scramble for Africa.

I guess that Britain for force the US to give it all of the Oregon Territory. This will cause the US to start the Mexican-American War sooner so the US can get a port on the Pacific. You should remember that Britain doing that will leave a bad taste in the mouth of the US in the future.

Britain succeeds in taking over Iran and Afghanistan.

China gets divided into tasty European Colonial bits.

I agree,You have a 1800's POD in the After 1900 Forum.
The better way for a superstrong Great Britain today, is a Federation (USA style) of UK,Canada,Australia,New Zealand from 1860s.
Better if American revolution had never happened and The Commonwealth of North America is in the British Federation.

If we are limited to XX century, the better way for a strong Britain is avoid WW-I,Russian Revolution,Nazism and Fascism,WW-II and Cold War.
Without all this (and remember the start is WW-I,so maybe if we avoid the Great war avoid the rest)
British Empire remains intact ,for sure, in 2010.
On the other hand in this timeline the world is less democratic and the tecnological level a bit more back...
But we can not have all.
Another cup of tea old bean?

I'd have Britiain keep at the forefront of industrial techniques throughout the 19thC instead of resting on its early lead in industrialisation and going into WW1 with outdated plant and equipment. I'd also see what can be done about Britains strategic weaknesses such an only being able to feed half the population during wartime.

Going back further, have George III bring Hanover from a Personal Union into a full political union, and actually make it the United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Hanover. Even if Prussia unifies the rest of Germany, having Hanover not part of it, and Germany not having North Sea ports would make a big change and the UK much, much, stronger.

This would of course involve replacing Salic Law with English Common Law in Hanoverrian lands.

So we have two roads:

1-POD before 1900: avoid American revolution, full political union with Hanover, unification of great part of Germany under a British "Kaiser",Imperial Federation of UK,Germany,Commonwealth of North America (with Canada),Australia,New Zealand.

2-POD after 1900: avoid the Great War (WW-I).

Continuing to update the industrial infrastructure would be important for Britain for any time from about 1860 (where the US started to get a head of steam) and 1945. Britain's biggest issue, however, is that history will ultimately hand power off to nations with far more population and resources than the United Kingdom. The only way around this problem is to have some sort of political merger between Britain and many of its colonies, particularly Canada and Australia. How you get that, honestly, I don't know.

A federation of dominons will not stop uboat's capacity for cripling Britain's ability to make total war, neither will holding Hannover. To do better with this strategic weakness Britain needs to be as self reliant as possible and with the most modern industries as possible make the most lethal armed forces possible in order to intervene effectively to counter this threat.
