As history records, simultaneously with the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attacked Wake Island. It became known as the "Alamo of the Pacific" and is one of the more infamous engagements of the war in the Pacific. Even though the island fell, there was an attempt by the USN to reinforce the island. A large contingent of the surviving navy units from Pearl was sent in the form of two task forces, one led by the Saratoga which was sent directly to Wake, and the other led by Lexington which was a diversionary attack on the Marshall Islands. IOTL Admiral Pye heard of a Japanese task force including two carriers being diverted to Wake to participate in the assaultwhich prompted him to call off the mission.
Now, what if however the mission went on as planned? Suppose that either, news of the IJN carriers presence doesn't reach Admiral Pye, or that he mans up and orders the attack carry on as planned, or that perhaps Pye wasn't placed in command of the Pacific fleet after the attack on Pearl. How would the naval Battle of Wake Island have played out? Could the USN succeeded in turning away or sinking the Soryu and Hiryu? Or would it have turned into another defeat for the US Navy? How would the larger strategic picture in the Pacific have been affected?
