There have been several threads recently discussing what if the atomic bomb was ready earlier and was used against the Germans but no one has written out an actual mission.
The purpose of this thread is to plan out an actual mission against a city or cities in Germany by USAAF Silverplate B-29s under the command of Paul Tibbetts. OTL the 509th Composite group was planning to do just that. I plan on writing out a story about he actual mission and posting it.
This is what I have so far as ideas:
-The 509th Composite group is formed as OTL and train up with the Silverplate B-29s.
-The Superforts will fly out of Millisle Northern Ireland. In this timeline construction of the airfield at Millisle is completed.
-Instead of going to India the 58th Bombardment Wing is deployed to Millisle and begins operations against Germany in 1944.
-At the request of Winston Churchill the RAF will play an active part in the mission. I plan on having Mosquitoes fly one of the weather Recon missions. Of course there will be an observer flying on one the Silverplate B-29s.
-The target list right now is:
-Dresden as Primary. (Not heavily damaged so good for bomb damage study)
-Chemnitz as secondary (For same reasons as Dresden)
-
What I need is help with is finding PODs to slow the war down and move up the Manhattan Project so that Germany gets nuked first. Once again here what I have so far:
-Ira Eaker asks for the very heavy bombers be sent to England to reinforce the 8th Air Force. Hap Arnold backs him up and convinces Marshall that the air offensive has to be saved before D-Day can happen. He still replaces Eaker with Doolittle however. President Roosevelt is convinced to wait until the Marianas are ready to launch the air campaign against Japan.
-The weather turns to crap in June 1944. D-Day is delayed and Dragoon is delayed as well. Or D-Day happens on time but because of the weather the Wallies barely get ashore. The French campaign turns into what the allies expected and by December have just reached the German frontier. Stalin drags his feet in the east. Meanwhile General Groves annouces the bomb is on track to be ready in the beginning of 1945.
