The Architonnerre

Leonardo da Vinci designed a steam cannon called the Architonnerre.
The steam cannon launched a projectile using only heat and water.
Suppose Leonardo's steam cannon had become popular on the battlefield in the early 1500s. What happens then?

Well designing and creating are very different things. Did his invention work? I'm genuinely asking, because I have no clue.

I don't think he ever tried it. For one thing, he lived for many years after designing it.

Now, I suppose you could build a working steam cannon, even with the limitations of technology at the time. BUt I don't think you could build one that outperformed conventional artillery.
