The Amtrak Wars wider world

For those of you that are unaware the Amtrak Wars series is set in a post apocalyptic world, with the Tracker Federation battling the Mutes in the United States.

My question is what remains of the rest of the world?

Always loved this series, the one thing that did always annoy me was how the Japanese ended up on the East Coast of North America, rather than the West.

As to other nations, it has been so many years since I read them I do not recall any others mentioned.

It is clear that no Mutes or others have developed a civilisation in Europe either capable of crossing the Atlantic or having the desire to do so. On the matter of Mexico a neo Toltec civilisation could be developing yet the federation would not know about it because of their obsession with the borders of the defunct USA.

If ione struck before the end of the Prophecy then the Federation will roll right over its army. If ione did not then the moment it got its hands on some horses it will have a draft animal and so start going places that its pre Columbian precedessos could not.

I think the Japanese in the series are the descendants of Japanese management and engineers, pre-apocalypse who ran the factories for the likes of Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi etc.

As most of these companies seemed to have built their factories on the East Coast its logical they would end up in the rust belt.

Its been a while since I read the series but I seem to recall that they had fled Japan.

I did many years ago write a story based on a European expedition that has set out to discover what happened to North America

I cannot recall all the details but it involved a super sub capable of operating small helicopters and the explorers used a fusion powered armoured buggy with a rapid fire rail gun

The short story I wrote had one such buggy with a 2 man recon team coming across a 'largered' Amtrack

1 of the men while collecting water comes across a similar party dong the same thing.

Lots of shooting first and not asking any questions on both sides.

It was much cooler in my head as I was writing it.

I haven't read it for years (20th Century !!!!). I can't recall it was discussed so I assumed they were sort of stranded there, it would make sense them being on that side of the US rather than sail the Pacific and then trek across a post apocalyptic US.

If someone has read it lately or still have their copy then maybe they can confirm it one way or the other.

My interpretation from the history at the start of Book 3 Iron Master is that they were descended from sailors on Antarctic whalers. The account definitely says that they arrived after a couple of centuries at sea.

For me something that has always interested me is the question over a surviving Soviet state similar to the Amtrak Federation. Alternatively, one country that I would be confident that would survive would be North Korea. Now that would make for an interesting TL...

This has also generated more interest than I envisaged, but what would you change either with the Amtrak Federation or the Plainfolk?
