Not as is IOTL, because Sadat was hosed with SMGs IIRC. That's not survivable, as we saw with Indira Gandhi three years later. But if the cell was liquidated, then likely he would continue until the late 1980s, and maybe Mubarak would be too old at that point. Perhaps Sadat's kids inherit as Mubarak's trying to do now?
 
John Paul dying would either crush Polish morale or make it even more anti-Soviet than it was. Hmmm. How much of that "John Paul II inspired the Poles to throw of the Soviet yoke" is exaggeration and how much is true?

I'm don't care about Mubarak right now. I'm stuck on what kind of a tightrope a Sadat-run Egypt would have to walk in 1982 when Israel invades Lebanon and Syria starts shooting at them.
 
To be honest, I thought this was going to be a Sadat/Reagan switch. :eek:

I honestly don't know enough about the Catholic Church at the time to be able to say what subtle effects would be had on the Curia, and who they would pick next.
