Thatcher takes the war to Argentina?

What if Thatcher had demanded some sort of limited british millitary attack on mainland Argentina as retribution for the Falklandswar?

What then?

Vote of no-confidence?
Why should the British soldiers die after liberation of the Falklands? How Mrs. Thatcher would argue before the House necessity of such operation?
If you did mean assault on Argentinian territory before taking of the Falklands... Well, what's the point of it? To force Argentinians to relocate garrison of the Islas Malvinas to the mainland? But RN successfully blocked them, and the Army was rightfully confident it could destroy the Argentinian forces in the archipelago. To compel Galtieri to surrender? Very doubtful, taking in the account his precarious internal political standing. To overthrow Argentinian junta? The British weren't in the necessary mood and with necessary resources for the regime-changing war (especially on their own)

1) It would have required a much larger infantry force, unless the plan was to take a very limited objective and use it for political leverage.

2) It would have been counter-productive, uniting the Argentines behind the Junta.

3) It would have brought a crisis within the OAS of volcanic proportions.

4) It would have poisoned either the US/UK or the US/Latin American relationship.

Had it been lefties junta in Argentina at the time. Would Reagan have joined in?

It's very unlikely that a left wing government would have invaded in the first place; you can't just flip a switch and let everything go from there. The motivations behind the war were to inflame patriotic nationalism and confidence in the military government.

A weak left wing government would have to worry about the military becoming more popular than the state if the war was successful, and a strong one would never take such a stupid risk.

There is no point. Losing the war ended the military junta, and more than a few Argentines at the time wanted Galtieri to go to the gallows for it. The war over the Falklands was only done so that the Junta could attempt to save their asses from collapse anyways, something to avoid pointing out that Argentina was nigh on bankrupt in 1982.

Exactly: what is the benefit to the UK of slagging the Argies any more than OTL? It won't happen just for spite.

All Thatcher wanted was the Falklands back and the Argies taken down a notch. Done and done.

Why go on?

SAS in Argentina

well, during the war, there were rumours that covert SAS teams had been inserted onto the Argentine mainland itself for covert intel-gathering...
