-Have an even higher German immigration rate to Texas; the German settlers in Hill country opposed secession and then opposed the Confederacy.
-A MUCH more popular Sam Houston, who urged for Independence rather than Confederation (after giving in to the secession, which he originally fought against), could perhaps persuade the rest of the Texas State government to vie for Independence.
If I recall correctly, he refused to swear an oath to the Confederacy at the original meeting of governors, and was kicked out of office.
