Teutonic Order keeps Gotland?

So what if the Teutonic knights instead of selling Gotland in 1408 decides to keep it as part of their realm? Would it help them remain a soverign state into the modern era?

From what I know of Gotland and the Teutonic Order, I can't see it making a difference. There is nothing special there which can boost their economy and not enough man power to turn the tables against Poland and Lithuania in 1410 (which seems to be the point where they started falling).

But say, they keep Gotland into the 1500s. Would the reformation topple them then?

As for economy you got a trading hub in Visby and if they go the Hospitaller way control of Gotland pretty much guarantees the control of Baltic trade but like you said it wont help much against Poland/Lithuania in other ways than giving a secure base

thats a debate they'd have to take up with Hansa League, and both the Swedish and Danish parts of Kalmar (which would, if nothing else, give them something to argee about)

Don't see any reason why it should. Presumably the island would just get secularised along with their mainland domains, when the Grand Master at that time turned Protestant and converted Prussia into a hereditary dukedom for himself & his heirs.

A trading hub is good, but it isn't enough to keep an economy going. Plus being far off on Gotland means that profits can't be maximised. It is a shame they couldn't move the trade to their homeland.

Well they could turn to piracy like their Mediterranean counterparts. Gotland isnt exactly a defensive fortress if someone decides to force them to cut it out though.

It was evidently strong enough to repulse the forces of Queen Margaret of Kalmar Union fame

You are thinking of Valdemar Atterdags (the father of Margareta) invasion of 1361 and even then the city opened its gates to him
Huh, i recalled it being mentioned as a specifically smelly battle (on account of the Danish failing to bury the dead).

There was a number of battles dont recall exactly how many or perhaps its better to say it was a running battle that ended outside Visby that refused to let the peasants in and only opened the gates of the city to the danes a couple of days after the battle outside the city walls but we are getting OT
