Terza Fase: WI on the Historic Compromise and Eurocommunism

So I've been reading a lot on Berlinguer, Eurocommunism, and the political event in Italy called the Historic Compromise. For those who aren't familiar on what it is, basically the Communist Party of Italy under Enrico Berlinguer wanted to push Communism into a coalition with the moderate Christian Democrats in order to make Communism a more appealing alternative and distance the party and the movement from the Communist Party of the USSR. What I would like to chew your brains on is what could be the outcome of this being successful? I don't think that this is the same as successful Allende government, and I would like to see what alternatives you have.

Ps: Lets totally throw the CIA plot out the window from the getgo, we're going to assume it fails otherwise whats the point.

Well, you need a total break of the relatioship between the PCI and PCF with the URSS; the PCUS tried to mantain his grip over the various national parties while the second had tried to be independent but at the same time not totally break the very theoretical united communist front...and i doubt it will be a very quiet divorce.
The effort can be succesfull...but the repercussion, at least on the italian political life, will be big; frankly i expect the PCI and the DC to divide themselfs on moderate and hardliner
