I'm sorry if this is a bit morbid; but in the lead up to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, the organisers of the Games had a fairly reasonable fear that some sort of terrorist attack may occur sometime during the Game's proceedings. After the 1996 bombing this uneasiness was well justified and the organisers ensured security was a top priority during the Olympics. No attacks occured, thankfully, however, what would have happened if some terrorist group (al Qaeda being the obvious one) successfully managed to detonate a bomb similar to Oklahoma 1995 or Bali 2002, killing around 200-300+ people during the Game's opening days?
Whilst it is fairly difficult, if not near-implausible for this to occur (security was incredibly meticulous when it came to this), I could imagine some sort of mistake or oversight may have led to this if al Qaeda was willing and competent enough to carry it out (though it's by no means likely). Additionally, with such a large number of politicians (both local and foreign) at the Olympics, what could be the fallout to one-or-more of them dying in the blast? Could it possibly lead to an Invasion of Afghanistan one year early?
Thoughts?
