Terra Nova

I just figured that they back 85 million years since it would give plenty of time for society to evolve and GTFO Earth before the asteroid hits and kills everything. Conviently destroying their society so modern man can't see it.

that would make sense to me
but then it leaves the question...of why not just do that in the future to begin with=?

So why do they use automatic weapons that due to Hollywood logic suck at killing dinosaurs and use a lot of ammo? Wouldn't something more rugged and actually possible for them to make new ammo be a better choice? I know rule of plot and all that but it's pretty dumb for the future US to pick such a poor choice.

They have millions of years, and they already know when the asteroid is coming and probably from where. They can stop it.

One thing I noticed that hasn't been mentioned by anyone about the Future parts, did you notice whose face was on the money? If Obama does turn out to be a one term president, or his second term goes aswell as his first, that will date the series in record time.

I haven't seen the series, so I'm kinda spoiling myself by looking at this thread.

But could it be as simple as the "Presidential Dollar Program" we have today? I mean, there's coins out there with John Tyler's face plastered on them. Perhaps the money is like trading cards and they have Obama and Bush and Jimmy Carter and Nixon and whoever else fits certain prerequisites for "face on money."

quick question too
is it just americans that are sent back?...ask cos everyone speaks english, majority are white (which by 2149 youd think be more a minority than a majority), they all have americanish accents for the most part, the goverment is military, theyll all talk about american history rather than global...

are any other nations actually in the program?
cos was wondering if there could be other portals, from other nations attempting to build colonies somewhere else on terra novas earth (even though i still think the show is gonan fail dramatically, itd still interesting to see a new "scramble for...." scenario

This should answer your question about why all the actors are white anglophone Americans:

(EDIT: well, panel 2 answers your question. Panels 3-5 are unrelated jokes.)

This show actually has promise. Watched the first episode today, not too bad, but not spectacular either. To you guys saying they are doomed because of eventual extinction in 20 million years...

Even 100.000 years is enough to have the entire planet populated 5 times over, civilization destroyed 3 times, 10 nuclear wars and plenty of time to colonize the rest of the solar system. Many times over.

By the time that asteroid actually comes, there won't be even a trace of humans there, or humanity is a massive galactic empire spanning thousands of worlds.

so...they completly ignored the fact that the probe couldve beign destroyed int he said 85 million years=?

From the way they said it I the probe was in an area of relative geologic stability and made to last a very long time, which is of course quite possible to do.

another thing....why would someone then bother to write geometric equations on a rock formation if it wasnt a message into the future?
thered be no point in inscribing it on rock less they wanted someone in the future to see it

That's been covered, it's not meant to be found in the future (it's unlikely it'd still exist by then), rather it's the Commander's son trying to screw with him by putting the truth about something he wants to know out in the open where he (and anyone else exploring) can find it, yes because it's in those patterns he does'nt know what it says/means.

also alof of the characters talk about things like their in the same timeline still...like communicating with the future world base...if its a different universe, then how can they still communicate regualry with them?...or why did the leader say at the end of the first ep " control the past, control the future"....

The transuniversal wormhole is shown to be fixed/activated at will.
As for communications it may very well be that matter can only travel one way (without being destroyed), but energy can travel both ways, sort of like in Stargate.

Ammo

That's one of the things that I brought up in the first episode when the had the predator chasing everyone and they only shot at it to wound it. Kind of stupid if you ask me. Which do I want around a wounded animal that attracts more predators or a dead one that I can harvest?

I'm enjoying the show so far, and I think it's great. The storyline is interesting, our Earth is suffering from worldwide pollution and massive overpopulation. In the overpopulation scenario, families are supposed to only consist of 4 people, two parents and two children. But the Shannon family violates that law and Jim Shannon, the father, is sent to prison. But two years into his six-year sentence, Jim escapes from the prison where he is being held and joins his family on the journey to Terra Nova, a colony established 85 million years in the past during the Late Cretaceous Period. I like that the show has dinosaurs, and you might notice that some of the species they show are entirely fictional, such as the Slashers. Others are real animals, for example, Carnotaurus. All in all, I think it's a show with potential. I've watched every episode so far except for episode 3. I'll probably watch episode 4 tonight.

I liked the show and the premise; what bugged me was that they plainly did research and specificly set in the Jurrasic and yet they still put a Carnotaurus in the show even though it did not evolve until the Cretaceous era.
They said the colony was 85 million years in the past, which would be the mid-Cretaceous, not the Jurassic. You might have thought it was the Jurassic based on the Brachiosaurs, but there were Brachiosaurs in the Cretaceous (not "Brachiosaurus" itself, but they didn't call them that in the show), there are some examples in the Brachiosaur article from the Terra Nova wiki.

There seems to be at least on flaw in the Terra Nova concept.
All the high-tech resources come from the original world.
This seems to work well most of the time, although there are times when some item or medicine is in short supply.

If, as we are lead to believe, the original world is collasping, at some point the supply of high technical resources will be cut off.

How will Terra Nova survive in the long run, if they have no more access to their home world?
There doesn't seem to be a lot of effort being made to make Terra Nova self sufficient.
Even under the best of circumstances, if the supplies from Earth are cut off, they will regress to an agraian society. It will take a lot of time to develop the resources to maintain a high tech civilization.

Earth is only dying in the sense that it's no longer easily habitable as it is now, however the world's not going to jut collapse or anything, so the connection would last centuries before that happened.

As for the Colony itself, well it's only a few years old, you have to learn to walk before you run.

perhaps the greatest flaw is that the only people in the colony are white americans, australians and one british indian.

Mira is black, Lieutenant Washington is Latina (which is or is'nt 'white' depending on who you ask) and I'm pretty sure I've seen other ethnic groups in the background.

That said it does make sense since the show is focused only on specific characters and their are hundreds of colonists that you don't see, plus the Rift IS in Chicago and from what I can tell they seem to imply that it's under the control of the United States, so it'd make sense their'd be more Americans.

Guns and Dinos

Just saw an article today talking about the show and whether it would be renewed for next season. According to the writer the producers apparently didn't want to show dinosaurs being killed so that is primarily why the weapons that they used were non-lethal. Apparently they were trying to go for the kiddie demographics.

Or they were trying to go for consistency.

The back story afterall is that it's meant to be a New Beginning for Humanity, one in which the bad things we did to Terra Prime are'nt going to be repeated, and not killing animals when you can stun them or chase them away fits with that.
