Tempar WIs.

I've just read a book on the Templars, not a Da Vinci Code style book but one supposedly dispelling the myths surrounding the Templars, and a few tidbits came up. One was that it was suggested in 1306, a year before they were 'attacked' in France, that the Templars merge with the Hospitallars. Apparently the Grand Master's reasons for not joining with the Hospitallers were feeble, considering many people considered the orders interchangable. Also many Templars were pensioned off into the care of Hospitallars and their properties were transfered to the Hospitallar as well, what wasn't taken by the French crown etc.

Would the merging of these two military orders from 1307, and subsequent non-supression of the Templars, change history much?
