Team 6 and the Removal of William Jefferson Clinton

I remember during the recent impeachment days, that there was specualtion that Clinton would not have voluntarily left office even if the Senate voted for his removal. Heres a two parter!

The Republican Congress runs a ruthless impeachment a'la Watergate and investigate everthing . Something real bad comes to the surface (ie Clinton personally makes a deal with the Chinese Communists to let them have military technology in exchange for campaign cash) and his poll numbers go down significantly (but with some support remaining). The Senate has a full blown trial and votes for Clinton's removal.

Shortly after the vote, Clinton announces he does not recognize the legitimacy of the vote and vows to stay on. VP Gore (who is now technically president) is somewhere in the Whitehouse but cant be reached for comment. Weeks go by and all attempts to remove Clinton fail. Congress goes to Court and is granted an order demanding the Clinton administration vacate. Clinton ignores the order. US Marshalls are then sent to enforce the order but are repulsed by loyal armed Clinton supporters.

In desperation, Congress sends a Letter of Marque and Reprisal to the Chief of Naval Operations directing him to expell the Clinton administration and locate President Gore. SEAL Team 6 backed up by the Marines from the Washington DC barracks are on the move. Where to from here?

This is not meant to start a flame war. Please, lets not get into the validity/wisdom of removing Clinton. I use Clinton because his was the first Presidential impeachment where the Navy was outfitted to do such an operation. If it makes you feel better, remove Clinton and substitute Nixon.

Though I can imagine the GOP dredging up everything to take Clinton down, Clinton, trashy and unprincipled as he was, probably wouldn't refuse to leave office. Even if he tried some kind of legal shenanigans to avoid impeachment (which is likely; remember, this is the guy who argued about "is"), bringing in a bunch of armed cronies to chase off US Marshals seems ASB.

"I use Clinton because his was the first Presidential impeachment where the Navy was outfitted to do such an operation"

You mean the Navy had contingency plans to remove a power-grabbing President? Whoa.

No, they did not have plans to remove Presidents in 1974......or 1998 for that matter. However, in 1974 the Navy had no hostage rescue/commando unit as it did in the late 90s. In 1974 it would just be Marines charging up the hill going after G. Gordon Liddy with guns blazing!

Ya'll are over thinking this, after he is impeached, Gore would be the official president and the Secret Service would "escort" Clinton out. True the Tres Sec has authority over them but Clinton would be a danger to the new president and they'll stop him.

That happened in Tunisia and Portugal

When Salazar was no longer president of Portugal due to old age, nobody dared to tell him. They just accepted on his commands and made up replies...It happened again in Tunisia about ten years ago, when Bourgouba got old.

The Repubicans spent 40 million dollars investigating everything in OTL. I guess the way Clinton might have been removed would have been if things had been timed differently.

In OTL Republicans were punished somewhat for the impeachment effort. Democrats made gains in 1998. Had the impeachment issue either arisen AFTER the fall of 1998 or sufficiantly before for the trial to have happened quickly and before the election it is possible Clinton would have been removed.

I am sure he would have left office

I am also sure that there would have been a strong reaction AGAINST this rom public opinion

OK, looking at the question on merit, then I think impeachment proceedings would begin against the Vice President and ANY OTHER member of cabinet who still serves the incumbent in defiance of the Constitution. I rather think that this in itself would cause the VP to change tack, but if not a rushed vote to kill the impasse would pass the presidency to the Speaker who would then act with the approval of Coingress to take power himself

Probably so. However, I didnt elaborate on Gore's condition. Hes essentially being held hostage.
