More aptly Mt. Rainier, which is more geologically active. Shasta, you'd get volcanic ash blanketing some of the California Central Valley, most of the ash fall over the Nevada Desert (that's why the Black Rock Desert is the Black Rock Desert). And a year without summer. And a mega Stalingrad for Hitler, depending on the time of year the volcano erupted. Maybe some damage to Salt Lake City.

Mt. Rainer blowing like Tambora would devastate Tacoma and maybe Seattle. Cut off the Milwaukee and Northern Pacific lines Great Northern to Everett probably OK. Bremerton Naval Base and Ft. Lewis--gone! Major damage to US Pacific fleet. Worse than Pearl Harbor, really. Survivors probably rebuild at Mt. Vernon-Anacortes leaving Seattle a ghost town. Bellingham probably too close to Mt. Baker (which is also a volcano) for comfort. Hanford plutonium plant destroyed and must be relocated someplace else. Spokane, Coer d.Alene, Yakima and Kellogg Idaho heavily damaged. Missoula MT not too bad.
