As the tin says. The best POD I can think of is the Northern Alliance's recapture of Baghram Airbase in 1998.

It was an utter disaster for the Taliban Air Force which lost 70% of their planes.

Lets say they get word of Massoud's offensive and block his recapture of the field allowing them to move their Aircraft out.

Without the loss of its valuable planes, the IEAAF goes back to supporting the Taliban Army advance.

The Taliban had nothing to do with 9/11 and couldn't give two shits about the U.S.A.

They offered on two occasions to hand Osama over to the Saudis and were told off. They offered to hand Osama over to the U.S. in 2000 and were told off.

They were willing to hand Osama over post 9/11 if the proper evidence was shown to them. Bush invaded them instead.

Are you being bloody serious?

The inventory of Shindand and Bagrham was a bunch of old MiG's and Sukhoi's along with a few helicopters. Both bases fell into Taliban hands along with most of the planes. Both of those aircraft types were fighters or close air support.

Now how are they suppose to make it to America? Hell they would probably be famous if they even got out of Afghanistan. All the nations surrounding Afghanistan would shoot those planes down as soon as they figured out they were Talibani. Yeah Talibani, i said it.

Admittedly the Afghan air force also had several Antonov Turboprops and some of them may have gone Taiban. They would suffer the same problems as the fighters however, not to mention that transports didnt rate high priority besides to be canabalized for parts.

Wait a moment, the Taliban is fighting a war, why would they send there precious air assets to America? If they were going for a suicide strike (a bad strategy in anycase) they would have selected to head for Tajikistan (which was supporting the Northern Alliance air force)... and most probably fail.

----------------------------------

As for the actual OP, i dont really know anything about the Afghan war so i cant contribute. In a place like Afghanistan though an air force, especially helicopter's which may be more important than bombers, could be a real important force multiplier. With a bit of luck and if the population supports them the Taliban may be able to completely take over Afghanistan. Of course then the northern alliance decides to go underground...
