Taiwan in a KMT victory TL

How would Taiwan develop in a KMT victory TL, with the ROC controlling most or all of Mainland China? I would imagine the island has a smaller population and economy, since the millions who fled there after 1949 would stay home. Would an independence movement still develop?

Likely remains a sleepy economic backwater, maybe developing into a modest naval/air center away from but still shielding the coastal economic core. Independence would be suicidal given how closely they'd be tied into the broader Chinese economy

There will be a lot of bitterness about the domination of Mainlanders, and a lot of nostalgia for Japanese rule. But the GMD would crush opposition, as it did in OTL in 1947.
