Syrian/Egyptian takeover of Jordan?

Damm. Cant believe that war is nearly forgotten. The victory of the Jordanian monarchy was a important point in the 20th Century history of the Palestinians. Another cluster of worms in the rot of Middleastern modern political history. Maybe a lot of folks don't want the events leading to and following the Black September events remembered at all.

Interesting. What do you suppose would have been the consequences of that war going the other way, and why did Jordan win?

For what would have happened had the Jordainian monarchy not won read up on the Black September revolt/events/politics. I don't feel competent to summarize.

The usual attribution to Jordain beating the Syrian Army is Syrian leadership incompetence. I've gamed out a few of the tactical engagements & the game designers are not kind to their valuation of the Syrian army units used. Again I am not the expert here, but a few witnesses & historians urged the Jordainian army to be much superior tactically and operationally to the Syrians.

In a Black September scenario, it is hard for me to envision a situation that doesn't lead to American and potentially Israeli intervention. Even IOTL, the Israeli airforce did a few passes of the Syrian column (I don't remember if it was before or after they were blocked by the Jordanians) for intimidation and the US had, IIRC, two carriers of the Israeli coast and an airborne brigade ready to be deployed to Jordan. So, I can't really see a way for Syria to takeover Jordan through the Black September crisis without precipitating American intervention, and quite possibly Soviet involvement in response.

What concessions do the Israelis score from backing Jordan? Does this undercut the monarchy in Jordan in the long term?

You might find this TL interesting. It has a successful Fateh takeover of Jordan with Syrian assistance.
