Sydney Newman stays in Canada

Sydney Newman was a man who worked for the CBC in the fifties. He later was hired by some British network, left it for the BBC, and created, among other things, Doctor Who.

What if he decided to remain at the CBC? What sort of effect would this have on both Canadian and British television?

This would be pretty enormous for Canadian TV, since The Doc is probably the most iconic single character in TV SF.

OTOH, on Canadian TV, would the show last anything like as long as the BBC version?

Hey, the CBC was a funding partner for the new series for the first few seasons. ;)

:cool::cool: IDK that.

Then again, that's a bit different than actually producing & broadcasting it...

Hmm, well that's a good one. The output at CBC English is probably going to be of a very high quality, and that will permeate throughout the entire television network. It would probably also have a knock-off effect on Radio-Canada (aka CBC French), so the quality of the téléromans gets better. It would certainly justify having increased funding from the Government - and/or the Government ends up finding a permanent long-term solution to the CBC's funding woes.
