It's usually recognised that the Swordfish attack on the Bismarck is the thing that doomed it. The torpedo strike on the rudder meant that all it could do was a circle,meaning that it had no way of getting back home. It also would have meant that being unable to manuver properly meant that it wouldn't really have been possible for it to use it's gunnery properly either.

My question is that had either of the swordfish attacks managed to get some critical hits that lead it to sink,without any involvement from RN battleships, would that lead to more investment in the carrier arm earlier or would the battleship lobby still have got their way?
