(If there's a way to take the words "a preview" off, please do so - I think once I get to 10 parts up it won't be a preview anymore
Coming soon...to a website near you.
Seriously, with Jimbrock posting the start of his, I felt I'd post the start of mine, too, just to get feedback on how it might work better. And, you know what, the first five parts kind of stand alone enough I'll post them. It won't be that much of a cliffhanger, and if people have any ideas on how to improve them, I can do that when I actually start - in late September if not later August.
While it might be a bit slower, I still think I can put together a timeline for a couple months, though with a couple speaking engagements over the next 2 months, trying to put some family history stuff together for a great uncle by his birthday next month, and a number of other things, I don't want to start too soon, But, the muse, like with fanfiction.net and all my family comedy stuff, is there.
I have decided on a title. The POD is Waldo having a slightly different ideology that interests some rich people. But, as I've thought it out, over about 5 parts and parts of several others, it doesn't focus on Waldo after the first few parts. Arthur of Brittany figures heavily. Common people have some influence on Arthur, and he leads in not just a religious reformation, but a cultural one. He reigns as long as the king after John in OTL; one could argue they were “due” for a great one. But, it won't just focus on Arthur's England, and without him as the POD, a title with Arthur might seem misleading.
I decided on Sweet Lands of Liberty. This TL focuses on religious and political freedom in the turmoil of the Middle Ages, and what butterflies come from it. England - where Arthur reigns - and Savoy - where a big butterfly has led to their actively supporting the Waldensians, not just tolerating them - are allies in this.
Now, some other things:
I did a U.S. where the difference is the Constitution and hence elections 2-3 years early, with OTL people and such on s.h.w-i. People here seem to like timelines with fictional characters. I’ve never done such an early POD, so it’ll be different, and I can use some real people with dynastic marriages, so I don’t have as much fictional to keep track of, along with all my real life commitments. I still do some estate planning and such, though the intense stress of 7-10 years ago is gone. I also have many other activities.
Since I don’t have time to do a lot of research, it’ll be through Wikipedia and feedback. It’s even possible I might have to turn it over to someone else, as I don’t like to have long (weeks at a time) delays between updates; as I’ve said, I don’t like to leave cliffhangers.
POD: With a fellow like Waldo, it’s kind of vague how he developed his ideas. A chance run-in seems good enough. Thus, richer nobility joins without feeling forced to surrender their riches. I have Frederick butterflied into being later to the river, and not drowning. From there, I’m trying to determine where to go, except Arthur eventually becomes King of England, and it would be fun to have Savoy more powerful, too. I’ll note what I’m thinking after these initial parts, and ask questions.
Thanks to those who answered the challenge I posted months ago about a Waldenisn Reformation. This will probably not be as long or detailed as some, I hope it’ll be fun. Because, that’s what this is supposed to be.
