Surviving Zanzibar + Kenya Coast

Zanzibar (the islands) was independent after colonialism until 1964 when it was annexed by Tanganyika.

The coastal portion of Kenya was nominally considered a british-administered dominion of zanzibar (hence it being the East Africa protectorate).

What if Zanzibar had either
  1. Become independent and included the Kenyan coast as part of its territory; or
  2. Upon independence entered into Confederation with Kenya, retaining nominal authority over the East African coast but received payment (or some other agreement) from Kenya over continued Kenyan administration of what here might be referred to as "mainland Zanzibar" or "northern zanzibar"
