In a crisis that sparked the Franco-Prussian war, the Spanish Glorious Revolution ended with the appointment of Amadeo, Duke of Aosta
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amadeo_I_of_Spain), younger son of the then Italian King, as King of Spain in 1870. OTL, his main backer and architecht of the Revolution, General Juan Prim, was assasinated on the same day.
After just two years of ruling the country, he had lost popular support and abdicated, disgusted.

My question is, could King Amadeo have survived on the throne for longer? In a possible ATL scenario where Italy by 1870 is a major Great Power which basically controls the Central Mediterranean, could butterflies be used to stop the assasiation of Prim? Could this keep Amadeo on the throne?

Also, would additional prestige from having the Prince of a much more powerful nation make the Spanish more content with their King?
Other ideas are what if instead of marrying a local heiress of a large family fortune he married some Spanish princess by coincidence?

Would this create a Spanish Savoy dynasty that could survive for at least two or three generations? How would this affect Spain, Italy, and Europe in general?

I'd like to know what you think about this and also if some Spanish members could give their opinion it would be great. :)
