Okay, this is a question that came up a LOT in another thread, and I've sadly not gotten to since then, despite it actually being a very interesting question.

If the Soviets and Americans went into nuclear war, would ANYONE survive in their countries of choice?

Before that, could either country really save that many people from fallout? Considering how thick the bunkers would have to be to survive such fallout, can they really save that many people?

My thoughts? No. The fallout spread will wipe out the USSR and the USA at least, if not beyond that. The only survivors will be those in bunkers that can't be built on a large scale, and even they will have to deal with a lack of long term food(unless they have a way of farming inside rather thick bunkers) or long term supplies of clean water.

Keep in mind, I'm not just talking about cancer deaths, but that so many places will get to radiation levels that will be radiation sickness causing levels.
