Surviving Aztec state-possibility of crusade?

Some posters have expressed the idea that due to Spanish wars and Cortez being defeated, Aztecs could have survived for longer resisting foreign invasion.

Once news of a civilization murdering children, flaying people, and cutting the hearts outs from chests reaches the Christian world, would it be possible for Pope to declare that those tribes are to be subjected to a crusade to eradicate that religion ?

No possibility of crusade. Get over it. There were several other contemporary societies that practiced human sacrifice, even on a large scale, that the Europeans were aware of for a longer time than the Aztec Empire. Take Dahomey, or the Benin Empire for example, which practiced mass human sacrifice from it's creation in the 1440's to the 1890's. No crusade was even called. They made regular dealings with the Portuguese and were even on relatively friendly terms with them. They even had dealings with the French and British, who did not invade until their diplomats were killed there. Highly doubt there'll be an Aztec crusade.

I don't think that the Pope even had that kind of authority anymore. What with the Reformation and relative failure of the other crusades (the last one in 1270) he was a paper tiger by the 1500s.

No the Aztecs would have more to worry about from a proper expedition organised by the Spainish crown. And even if they survived that then there are the Portugese, Dutch, French and British to worry about. A Tlaxcallan army armed with spanish swords and crossbows could also prove a threat.

More importantly though, it was a civilization which had a lot of gold to plunder

You do know that people other then the 'Mexica' sacrified? The Tlaxcallans were actually Aztecs as well.....

There's no Crusade over this. The Ottomans were still using the Devshirme custom to fill the ranks of their standing army, which right there was more offensive by virtue of Non-Christians enslaving Christians. There were African peoples as noted who practiced human sacrifice, the whole human sacrifices thing was inherent in the ideology of Mesoamerican civilizations as much as the idea of a single universal Emperor was in the ideology of European and Southwest Asian civilization once the Roman Empire shrunk.

For that matter, Europeans visited places like Shanghai and Japan, which if you've ever seen pictures of the Japanese festival with the Godzilla-sized phalli.....

And in any case, Europeans were motivated to go to war with Muslims with complete lies about what Islam really was. Now, that they'd do worse as regarded the Aztecs.......not really. The Wars of Religion would be starting up and delaying significant expeditions the same way that the Anglo-Dutch war caused the disappearance of the Roanoke colony.

Doubt it. He wasn't calling crusades against the Ottomans at the time, who were a much bigger 'threat' to the Christiandom. Why Aztecs, way over the Atlantic sea in the land he gave to the Spanish to do what they wanted with.

"Murdering children" and "flaying people" were pretty common practices in the realms that were conquering. Unless they were raping and destroying Christian children in Portugal or something I doubt the Pope gives it much attention. Remember, at the time of this PoD the auto-de-fé was a legally sanctioned and not uncommon practice.

The Pope isn't going to give two shits about anything that heathens are doing to other heathens.

Hell, he probably won't even give one.

And for that matter, he won't really care if they're doing it to Christians either, unless one of the Christians was both European and important. For an example, see exactly how much the Pope cared about what happened to pretty much the entire Japanese Christian community in the early decades of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

quoted for truth. The Pope could care less about anyone other than himself during those days
