Survival of the roman republic (19th century)

What if the roman republic of the 19th century survive? Will we see an italian state under a roman name?

Also, would a roman state consider itself the heirs of the roman empire, like how modern day china consider itself to have a unbroken history as a state, like how Iran is considered to be the modern day persian empire?

IIRC for Mazzini's republic to continue means that the Two Sicilies has to fall, either to republicanism which finds common cause with Rome, or within itself, splintering into independent Naples and Sicily and presumably internal squabbling

The thing is I can't remember beyond this point !

Actually... Roman Republic was doomed as soon as Julius Caesar showed them how to grasp supreme power... If it wasnt Caesar it would be someone else... some power hungry General/politician...
Roman Empire has a chance surviving.. Roman Republic no...
As a matter of fact in 811 AD Eastern Roman Emperor Staurakius (who was paralysed after a neck wound in the disastrous Battle of Pliska) threatened to abolish the Empire and proclaim a Republic if his wife Theophano wasnt accepted as his successor... He was deposed quickly however by his sister Prokopia and her husband Michael Rangabes... Even if he had proclaimed a Republic i would give the new regime merely 10 years before collapsing...

ray243's not talking about a continuation of the original Roman republic; he's talking about the short-lived republic that was established in Rome during the 19th century.

What about my first question, will the new roman republic actively claim itself to be the successor of the roman empire?
