Bisin is a naturally occurring lantibiotic (an anti-bacterial peptide) discovered by University of Minnesota microbiologist Dan O'Sullivan. Unlike earlier lantibiotics discovered, such as nisin, bisin also kills Gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli, salmonella and listeria.
The food-preservative properties of bisin could lead to food products that resist spoilage for years. It was discovered by accident, something that could have happened earlier. (http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-08-microbiologist-super-preservative.html)
1. What is the earliest date it could have been discovered?
2. What effect would it have, if it was discovered earlier?
